The Effect of Smartphone App-Use Patterns on the Performance of Professional Golfers.Jea Woog Lee, Jae Jun Nam, Kyung Doo Kang & Doug Hyun Han - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Smartphone app-use patterns will predict professional golfers’ athletic performance, and the use time of serious apps would be associated with improved performance. This longitudinal 4-week observation of 79 professional golfers assessed golf handicaps and smartphone app-use patterns at the start of the Korean professional golf season and 2 and 4 weeks later. We classified use as social networking, entertainment, serious apps, and others. Use time of entertainment apps increased for non-improved golfers but did not change for improved golfers. Use time (...)

Zhi 李贄, also named ( hao 號) Zhuowu 卓吾 (1527–1602), and argues that he articulates a coherent and compelling vision of a good life focused on the expression of genuine feelings distinctive to each individual. Through a study of literary texts and terms of art he refers to in his critical essay “On the Child-like Heart-mind” ( Tongxin Shuo 童心說), as well as the metaphors and images he fleshes out throughout his writings, I characterize Li’s ethical vision and show that (...)

Episodic memory: It's about time (and space).Lynn Nadel, Lee Ryan, Katrina Keil & Karen Putnam - 1999 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 22 (3):463-464.
Aggleton & Brown rightly point out the shortcomings of the medial temporal lobe hypothesis as an approach to anterograde amnesia. Their broader perspective is a necessary corrective, and one hopes it will be taken very seriously. Although they correctly note the dangers of conflating recognition and recall, they themselves make a similar mistake in discussing familiarity; we suggest an alternative approach. We also discuss implications of their view for an analysis of retrograde amnesia. The notion that there are two routes (...)

Time-varying boundaries for diffusion models of decision making and response time.Shunan Zhang, Michael D. Lee, Joachim Vandekerckhove, Gunter Maris & Eric-Jan Wagenmakers - 2014 - Frontiers in Psychology 5:112331.
Diffusion models are widely-used and successful accounts of the time course of two-choice decision making. Most diffusion models assume constant boundaries, which are the threshold levels of evidence that must be sampled from a stimulus to reach a decision. We summarize theoretical results from statistics that relate distributions of decisions and response times to diffusion models with time-varying boundaries. We then develop a computational method for finding time-varying boundaries from empirical data, and apply our new method to two problems. The (...)

Mistakes during criminal investigations are costly, leading to wrongful convictions, so it is helpful to employ rigorous analytic methods to help mitigate errors and biases. This paper introduces a new method to help make sense of a set of information, allowing thought processes to be externalised in a systematic and transparent manner. While this method is presented in a criminal investigation context, it can be applied to any situation where analysis of several hypotheses and evidence is required. Open source software (...)

The Relationship of Insufficient Effort Responding and Response Styles: An Online Experiment.Gene M. Alarcon & Michael A. Lee - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
While self-report data is a staple of modern psychological studies, they rely on participants accurately self-reporting. Two constructs that impede accurate results are insufficient effort responding and response styles. These constructs share conceptual underpinnings and both utilized to reduce cognitive effort when responding to self-report scales. Little research has extensively explored the relationship of the two constructs. The current study explored the relationship of the two constructs across even-point and odd-point scales, as well as before and after data cleaning procedures. (...)

Mindful attention predicts greater recovery from negative emotions, but not reduced reactivity.Sinhae Cho, Hyejeen Lee, Kyung Ja Oh & José A. Soto - 2017 - Cognition and Emotion 31 (6):1252-1259.
This study investigated the role of dispositional mindful attention in immediate reactivity to, and subsequent recovery from, laboratory-induced negative emotion. One hundred and fourteen undergraduates viewed blocks of negative pictures followed by neutral pictures. Participants’ emotional responses to negative pictures and subsequent neutral pictures were assessed via self-reported ratings. Participants’ emotional response to negative pictures was used to index level of emotional reactivity to unpleasant stimuli; emotional response to neutral pictures presented immediately after the negative pictures was used to index (...)

Most modern evangelicals classify the Abrahamic covenant as unconditional. But the label is ambiguous. A review of the covenant passages strongly suggests that the blessings promised to Abraham were conditioned on his obedience – making the covenant, in this sense, conditional. On the other hand, once Abraham obeyed God’s commands, the covenant became prophetically guaranteed – and is, in this sense, unconditional. The nuance is more than theological trivia, for God’s dealings with Abraham have profound implications for us. Abraham received imputed (...)

Mental health is a kind of emotional state, a good psychological state can have a positive impact on a person, physical exercise can have a positive impact on the psychological state of college students, prevent the generation of negative emotions, improve the bad emotional state, and then promote the mental health of college students. Health is an inevitable requirement to promote the all-round development of people and a basic condition for economic and social development. Health education should be incorporated into (...)

‘Angry fish’ and ‘dying fish’ matter in the Zhuangzi Too: Political analogies in the ‘happy fish’ dialogue.Ting-Mien Lee 李庭綿 - 2024 - Asian Philosophy 34 (4):1-12.
The ‘happy fish’ dialogue is one of the best-known and heatedly debated passages of the Zhuangzi. Scholars have constructed different interpretations of the dialogue. Some argue that this dialogue expresses the idea of living at ease and enjoying life as it is; some refer to the idea of anti-anthropocentrism, while others reconstruct the dialogue as certain epistemological debates. This paper examines the connotations of ‘fish’, ‘water’, and ‘river’ in early Chinese political discourses and reads the political connotations in the dialogue (...)

Face Transplantation and Identity: Hidden Identities, Exceptions, and Exclusions.Joseph Lee - 2019 - Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal 29 (2):125-158.
The face is the first thing that others notice and remember about a person. This is true for the severely facially burned patient, with disfigurement, impaired self-esteem and body image. They and others suffer from chronic devastating facial sequelae resulting from tumors, burns, or congenital malformations and trauma, e.g. ballistic injury to the face. Face transplantation is considered a way to restore eating, swallowing, and speech, and to reestablish esthetics.Alongside these vital bodily functions, the face plays a remarkable role in (...)

Alterations in motor modules and their contribution to limitations in force control in the upper extremity after stroke.Gang Seo, Sang Wook Lee, Randall F. Beer, Amani Alamri, Yi-Ning Wu, Preeti Raghavan, William Z. Rymer & Jinsook Roh - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
The generation of isometric force at the hand can be mediated by activating a few motor modules. Stroke induces alterations in motor modules underlying steady-state isometric force generation in the human upper extremity. However, how the altered motor modules impact task performance remains unclear as stroke survivors develop and converge to the three-dimensional target force. Thus, we tested whether stroke-specific motor modules would be activated from the onset of force generation and also examined how alterations in motor modules would induce (...)

    Menarche and the (hetero)sexualization of the female body.Janet Lee - 1994 - Gender and Society 8 (3):343-362.
Menarche—or a woman's first menstrual period—is a central aspect of body politics. Through explorations of oral and written narratives, I suggest that girls' subjective sense of themselves as maturing women at menarche develops simultaneously with a process of sexualization whereby young women experience themselves as sexualized, and their bodies are produced as sexual objects. While women internalize negative scripts associated with the bleeding female body, they also respond with consciousness and resistance.
